It is studied in animal models of tendon, muscle, gut and vascular injury and has no approved medical use anywhere. Most of the published work comes from that group and its collaborators. The proposed mechanisms in animal studies involve the nitric oxide system, growth factor receptor signalling (including VEGFR2 and the FAK-paxillin pathway) and the formation of new blood vessels, but no single receptor for BPC-157 has been identified and the mechanism is not settled.

It has never been developed through a full clinical programme. There are no completed, controlled human trials establishing benefit or safety, and the small amount of human data that exists is retrospective and uncontrolled. BPC-157 is not an approved medicine in the UK, the EU or the United States. Since 2022 it has been listed by the World Anti-Doping Agency under S0, non-approved substances, so it is prohibited in sport at all times.

What the published research reports

A 2003 study in rats reported that BPC-157 accelerated healing of a surgically transected Achilles tendon, with better functional recovery and tissue scores than saline-treated controls, and that it stimulated tendocyte growth in vitro (Staresinic 2003). A 2011 in vitro study using rat Achilles tendon explants reported increased tendon fibroblast outgrowth, survival under oxidative stress and cell migration, with the FAK-paxillin pathway implicated (Chang 2011). A 2016 review by the originating group summarised animal work across gut, brain and vascular injury models (Sikiric 2016). The limitation shared by all of this is that it is animal or cell work, largely from one research network, at doses and routes that do not translate to any product.

The human literature is thin. BPC-157 was associated with faster outgrowth of cells from the explants, better survival of cells under oxidative stress and more cell migration, although it did not directly increase cell proliferation. The authors linked these effects to the FAK-paxillin signalling pathway; the work was confined to cells and tissue in culture. A 2016 review by the Zagreb group that has produced most of the BPC-157 literature summarised its own brain-gut axis work in animals; it is a review of that group's research rather than independent confirmation.

The most complete independent appraisal so far is a 2025 systematic review from Case Western Reserve University, which screened 544 records published between 1993 and 2024 and kept 36 studies. Thirty-five were preclinical. The single clinical paper was a retrospective case series in which 7 of 12 patients given an injection into the knee for chronic pain reported relief lasting more than six months; it had no control group, and it concerned injection, not capsules. The reviewers graded the whole body of evidence at levels IV and V, the lowest tiers, found no clinical data on adverse effects in humans, and flagged unregulated manufacture and contamination as hazards.

The limitations therefore matter more than any single finding: almost all of the evidence comes from a single research network, no randomised controlled trial in humans has been published in full, and BPC-157 has never been authorised as a medicine anywhere. The honest answer is that nobody has measured it for capsules. Research on BPC-157 has used several routes: injection into the abdominal cavity in most rodent work, direct application in some wound models, and in certain Zagreb experiments the peptide was dissolved in the animals' drinking water. The 2025 systematic review reported that, in the animal data available, BPC-157 has a half-life of under 30 minutes, is metabolised in the liver and is cleared by the kidneys. None of those figures comes from a swallowed capsule in a person.

The underlying problem for any peptide taken by mouth is digestion. Stomach acid and pepsin, then pancreatic and brush-border enzymes, cleave peptide bonds, and a fifteen-residue chain is well within their range. The originating group reports that BPC-157 resists human gastric juice, but whether intact peptide crosses the gut wall in people is unknown.

As laboratory materials the formats behave differently. Capsules hold a fixed weight of dry powder, usually diluted with a filler, so uniformity depends on how well the batch was blended; a 200 mcg fill is a tiny fraction of the capsule contents, which makes even mixing harder. Thymosin beta-4 research is spread across many groups and mostly uses the full-length protein, including small early clinical studies of eye and skin preparations; the fragment sold as TB-500 has no comparable human data, and BPC-157 work comes mostly from one Zagreb network.

Question

BPC-157

TB-500

Parent molecule

Gastric juice protein

Thymosin beta-4

Size

15 amino acids

Fragment of a 43-amino-acid protein

Licensed as a medicine

Nowhere

Nowhere

WADA section

S0, non-approved substances

S2, growth factor modulators

Prohibited

At all times

At all times

No study has compared the two directly, so there is no basis for ranking one above the other, and we publish nothing on using them together. S0 applies at all times, in and out of competition, across every sport that has adopted the World Anti-Doping Code, including those tested by UK Anti-Doping. Under strict liability, an athlete answers for any prohibited substance in their sample, whatever the label said.

A detection method is published. In 2017 the Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory in Salt Lake City reported BPC-157 in confiscated vials and validated a urine test with a limit of detection of 0.1 ng/mL. The peptide stayed stable in stored urine for at least four days, and a metabolite formed in plasma was proposed as a second marker to make the test more specific. That paper did not measure excretion after human exposure, and no other study has, so the accurate description is detectable, window not established. Athletes should check the current list.

Storage, stability and handling

BioLab has not published stability data for this capsule, and no independent study of BPC-157 capsule shelf life exists, so any expiry date printed on the pack is the reference point. Peptide chemistry indicates what shortens it. Water is the main threat, because it allows hydrolysis of peptide bonds; hydrochloride salts of peptides can also draw moisture from the air, so a pack left open in a humid room is at particular risk. Heat speeds degradation and ultraviolet light adds to it. Capsule shells also soften in damp air.

For the laboratory, that translates into a short routine. Keep the container tightly closed, cool, dry and out of direct sunlight, away from radiators and steamy rooms. Leave any desiccant in place. If the pack is stored cold, allow it to warm to room temperature before opening so moisture does not condense inside. Keep capsules in their original labelled container so they can still be matched to a certificate. Use gloves for opened capsules, keep them away from food, children and pets, and dispose of unwanted material as chemical waste.

Glossary

Amino acid residue: one unit in a peptide chain; BPC-157 has fifteen.

Hydrochloride (HCl): a salt form in which chloride accompanies the peptide; it adds mass that is not peptide.

Counter-ion: the charged partner, such as chloride or acetate, that stays with a peptide after purification.

Microgram (mcg): one thousandth of a milligram; 200 mcg equals 0.2 mg.

Preclinical: research in cells or animals, before any study in people.

Systematic review: a structured search and appraisal of all studies on a question, using stated rules.

Half-life: the time taken for the amount of a substance in the body or a sample to fall by half.

Strict liability: the anti-doping principle that an athlete is responsible for any prohibited substance in their sample.

Section S0: the WADA category for substances with no current approval for human therapeutic use.

Related

All brands of BPC-157 we stock, compared

All BioLab products

Research peptides

Batch testing and certificates of analysis

Delivery and returns

This product is supplied for laboratory research use only. TB-500 is the market name for synthetic peptides based on thymosin beta-4, a 43-amino-acid protein present in most human cells best known for binding monomeric actin, a building block of the cell's internal scaffolding. Full thymosin beta-4 weighs about 4,963 g/mol, three and a half times as much. Products sold as TB-500 may contain the full sequence or a shorter fragment, and the Thoroughbred Labs TB-500 listing does not state which.

Evidence. For BPC-157 the 2025 review counted 35 preclinical studies and one uncontrolled clinical series. The full-length thymosin beta-4 protein went further, into clinical programmes for wounds, the cornea and cardiac repair, including a placebo-controlled intravenous tolerability study in healthy volunteers. Those studies used the full protein by injection or local application, not a capsule, and none produced an approved medicine. No trial has compared the two peptides, so neither can be ranked above the other. Being a peptide, it belongs to neither the SARM nor the steroid class, although shops often list it beside both.

Identifier

BPC-157

CAS number

137525-51-0

Molecular formula

C62H98N16O22

Molecular weight

1419.5 g/mol

Sequence (one-letter code)

GEPPPGKPADDAGLV

InChIKey

HEEWEZGQMLZMFE-RKGINYAYSA-N

PubChem CID

9941957

What the published research reports

A 2011 study of rat Achilles tendon reported that BPC-157 increased outgrowth of tendon explants and the migration and survival of tendon fibroblasts in culture, and linked this to activation of the FAK-paxillin signalling pathway. That work came from Chang Gung University in Taiwan, one of the few laboratories outside Zagreb to publish on the peptide. A 2016 review by the originating group summarised its own rodent findings on the gut, brain and vascular system. Reviewers have noted as a limitation that most of the evidence comes from that one research network.

The first formal pharmacokinetic study appeared only in 2022, from a group in Xi'an, China, preparing BPC-157 for clinical development. In rats and beagle dogs given the peptide intravenously or by intramuscular injection, the intact peptide had an elimination half-life of under 30 minutes, and absolute bioavailability after intramuscular injection was roughly 14 to 19 per cent in rats and 45 to 51 per cent in dogs. Radiolabelled peptide was broken quickly into small fragments and then single amino acids, excreted mainly in urine and bile. The oral route was not tested.

There are no published, peer-reviewed randomised controlled trials of BPC-157 in humans, and no pharmacokinetic data on oral capsules in people. The 2022 pharmacokinetic study measured only intravenous and intramuscular injection, so no published figure exists for how much intact peptide, if any, reaches the blood after a capsule is swallowed. The general obstacle is digestion: pepsin and the intestinal proteases exist to cut peptide bonds, and a 15-residue chain is a typical substrate. The originating group describes BPC-157 as stable in human gastric juice, a finding from its own laboratory that no published human study has tested.

As materials, the formats differ mainly in handling. A lyophilised vial is dry and comparatively stable until reconstituted; in solution, hydrolysis and microbial growth become concerns, and each measured volume is only as accurate as the mixing and drawing. Ready-mixed liquids carry those issues from the start. A capsule holds a fixed fill of dry powder blended with a filler, so its consistency depends on how evenly the batch was mixed, which only a per-capsule content test can confirm. Searches such as "BPC 157 capsules 1000mcg" reflect labels that state strength in micrograms; none is stated for this pack. None of this suggests that any format produces an effect. No study has published how long after exposure BPC-157 remains detectable in human urine, so the accurate statement is: detectable, window not established. General peptide chemistry still ranks the risks. Moisture comes first: it lets peptide bonds hydrolyse, clumps the powder and softens capsule shells, while very dry heat makes them brittle. Warmth speeds every degradation reaction, and light adds to it. Stability in gastric juice, as the originating group reports it, concerns hours in acid, not months on a shelf.

In practice, keep the tub sealed in a cool, dry place out of direct light, away from radiators, windowsills and steamy rooms. Note the date of first opening beside the batch number. Treat the pack as a laboratory reagent: gloves for opened capsules or loose powder, nowhere near food or drink, out of reach of children and animals, and waste disposed of as chemical waste rather than in household bins or drains. Keep capsules in the container that carries the lot number, or they can no longer be matched to a certificate.

Glossary

Pentadecapeptide: a peptide made of 15 amino acids; BPC-157 is one.

Peptide bond: the link between neighbouring amino acids, which both digestive enzymes and moisture can break.

Bioavailability: the share of an administered amount that reaches the bloodstream unchanged.

Lyophilised: freeze-dried, the usual state of peptide powder supplied in vials.

HPLC: high-performance liquid chromatography, the separation technique behind most purity percentages; components leave the column at different times.

LC-MS: chromatography linked to a mass spectrometer, so every separated component is also weighed, which makes an identity result firmer.

Net peptide content: the proportion of a peptide powder that is peptide once water and counter-ions are excluded.

Limit of detection: the smallest amount an assay can distinguish from a blank sample.

Thymosin beta-4: an actin-binding protein 43 amino acids long; TB-500 is sold as a synthetic peptide derived from it.

Related

BPC-157 collection: every brand we hold, set side by side on strength, pack size and testing

All Yakka Strength products stocked at Free Muscle

SARMs vs peptides, on how the two classes differ

Delivery and returns

Supplied for laboratory research use only and not for human consumption.
