BPC-157 was associated with faster outgrowth of cells from the explants, better survival of cells under oxidative stress and more cell migration, although it did not directly increase cell proliferation. The authors linked these effects to the FAK-paxillin signalling pathway; the work was confined to cells and tissue in culture. A 2016 review by the Zagreb group that has produced most of the BPC-157 literature summarised its own brain-gut axis work in animals; it is a review of that group's research rather than independent confirmation.

The most complete independent appraisal so far is a 2025 systematic review from Case Western Reserve University, which screened 544 records published between 1993 and 2024 and kept 36 studies. Thirty-five were preclinical. The single clinical paper was a retrospective case series in which 7 of 12 patients given an injection into the knee for chronic pain reported relief lasting more than six months; it had no control group, and it concerned injection, not capsules. The reviewers graded the whole body of evidence at levels IV and V, the lowest tiers, found no clinical data on adverse effects in humans, and flagged unregulated manufacture and contamination as hazards.

The limitations therefore matter more than any single finding: almost all of the evidence comes from a single research network, no randomised controlled trial in humans has been published in full, and BPC-157 has never been authorised as a medicine anywhere. The honest answer is that nobody has measured it for capsules. Research on BPC-157 has used several routes: injection into the abdominal cavity in most rodent work, direct application in some wound models, and in certain Zagreb experiments the peptide was dissolved in the animals' drinking water. The 2025 systematic review reported that, in the animal data available, BPC-157 has a half-life of under 30 minutes, is metabolised in the liver and is cleared by the kidneys. None of those figures comes from a swallowed capsule in a person.

The underlying problem for any peptide taken by mouth is digestion. Stomach acid and pepsin, then pancreatic and brush-border enzymes, cleave peptide bonds, and a fifteen-residue chain is well within their range. The originating group reports that BPC-157 resists human gastric juice, but whether intact peptide crosses the gut wall in people is unknown.

As laboratory materials the formats behave differently. Capsules hold a fixed weight of dry powder, usually diluted with a filler, so uniformity depends on how well the batch was blended; a 200 mcg fill is a tiny fraction of the capsule contents, which makes even mixing harder. Lyophilised powder in vials stays dry until reconstituted; solutions, including ready-made liquids, are exposed to hydrolysis and contamination. None of this implies that any format has an effect. S0 applies at all times, in and out of competition, across every sport that has adopted the World Anti-Doping Code, including those tested by UK Anti-Doping. Under strict liability, an athlete answers for any prohibited substance in their sample, whatever the label said.

A detection method is published. In 2017 the Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory in Salt Lake City reported BPC-157 in confiscated vials and validated a urine test with a limit of detection of 0.1 ng/mL. The peptide stayed stable in stored urine for at least four days, and a metabolite formed in plasma was proposed as a second marker to make the test more specific. That paper did not measure excretion after human exposure, and no other study has, so the accurate description is detectable, window not established. Athletes should check the current list.

Storage, stability and handling

BioLab has not published stability data for this capsule, and no independent study of BPC-157 capsule shelf life exists, so any expiry date printed on the pack is the reference point. Peptide chemistry indicates what shortens it. Water is the main threat, because it allows hydrolysis of peptide bonds; hydrochloride salts of peptides can also draw moisture from the air, so a pack left open in a humid room is at particular risk. Heat speeds degradation and ultraviolet light adds to it. Capsule shells also soften in damp air.

For the laboratory, that translates into a short routine. Keep the container tightly closed, cool, dry and out of direct sunlight, away from radiators and steamy rooms. Leave any desiccant in place. If the pack is stored cold, allow it to warm to room temperature before opening so moisture does not condense inside. Keep capsules in their original labelled container so they can still be matched to a certificate. Use gloves for opened capsules, keep them away from food, children and pets, and dispose of unwanted material as chemical waste.

Glossary

Amino acid residue: one unit in a peptide chain; BPC-157 has fifteen.

Hydrochloride (HCl): a salt form in which chloride accompanies the peptide; it adds mass that is not peptide.

Counter-ion: the charged partner, such as chloride or acetate, that stays with a peptide after purification.

Microgram (mcg): one thousandth of a milligram; 200 mcg equals 0.2 mg.

Preclinical: research in cells or animals, before any study in people.

Systematic review: a structured search and appraisal of all studies on a question, using stated rules.

Half-life: the time taken for the amount of a substance in the body or a sample to fall by half.

Strict liability: the anti-doping principle that an athlete is responsible for any prohibited substance in their sample.

Section S0: the WADA category for substances with no current approval for human therapeutic use.

Related

All brands of BPC-157 we stock, compared

All BioLab products

Research peptides

Batch testing and certificates of analysis

Delivery and returns

This product is supplied for laboratory research use only. Mice given the compound showed more type IIa oxidative muscle fibres, a gene expression pattern in muscle resembling the acute response to aerobic exercise, and greater running endurance; the authors reported that ERR alpha activation was critical for the endurance effect. A 2024 follow-up in diet-induced obese and genetically obese (ob/ob) mice reported increased energy expenditure and fatty acid oxidation, less fat mass accumulation and improved insulin sensitivity. Authors of both papers declared shareholdings in a company developing ERR-based therapeutics.

In a 2026 paper the same group described a chemically distinct successor, SLU-PP-915, and stated plainly that SLU-PP-332 improves aerobic performance in mice but lacks oral bioavailability; the newer molecule was characterised because it is active by mouth. In that paper SLU-PP-332 was given by intraperitoneal injection, and it too carries a declared conflict of interest: the senior author is named as inventor on the university's intellectual property covering SLU-PP-915 and holds shares in companies developing ERR agonists. These are orphan nuclear receptors, unrelated to the oestrogen receptor despite the name, that regulate mitochondrial biogenesis and oxidative metabolism in muscle and heart. It was characterised as an ERR agonist by Burris, Walker and colleagues at Saint Louis University in work first reported in 2023, and it is behind the exercise-in-a-pill headlines of the last few years.

In the 2023 ACS Chemical Biology paper, the compound raised mitochondrial function in a muscle cell line, and mice given it showed more type IIa oxidative muscle fibres, an ERR alpha-specific gene programme resembling the acute response to aerobic exercise, and greater treadmill endurance; the authors reported that ERR alpha activation was critical to the endurance effect (Billon et al., 2023). Three of the authors declared shareholdings in a company developing ERR-based therapeutics. A 2024 follow-up in diet-induced obese and ob/ob mice reported higher energy expenditure and fatty acid oxidation, less fat mass accumulation and improved insulin sensitivity (Billon et al., 2024). There is no human data of any kind, no human pharmacokinetic study, and no safety study in people. It is one of the newest compounds in this market and one of the least characterised. Its systematic name, 4-hydroxy-N-[(E)-naphthalen-2-ylmethylideneamino]benzamide, describes a naphthalene ring joined to a 4-hydroxybenzoyl group through an acylhydrazone link. On the first, the position is short. SLU-PP-332 is not a licensed medicine in the UK and has not been assessed by the MHRA. It is not an authorised food supplement, and it is not a controlled drug. That leaves one lawful basis for a UK shop, which is sale to adults for laboratory research, with no suggestion that anyone should swallow it. It is not for human consumption. In sport, SLU-PP-332 is not named on the WADA Prohibited List but, as a substance with no current approval for human therapeutic use, it falls under section S0 (non-approved substances) and is prohibited at all times. Anyone subject to anti-doping rules should consult the current list.

On the second question, the compound's youth is the problem. It entered the pharmacology literature in 2023, reference standards are scarce, and no pharmacopoeia monograph exists, so a label on its own proves little. A capsule holds a weighed powder fill, and at 200 mcg the active ingredient must be spread through a much larger mass of filler; uneven blending is the main risk, and only a content assay on the batch can show whether it happened. A liquid is measured by volume and depends on the compound staying dissolved and intact in its solvent. Loose powder puts all the weighing on the researcher. Both are small molecules that act on nuclear receptors controlling oxidative metabolism in muscle, and both became known through mouse treadmill experiments. There the resemblance largely ends.

Cardarine is an agonist of PPAR delta, a different receptor from the ERR family. In a 2008 Cell study, a PPAR delta agonist combined with training increased oxidative muscle fibres and running endurance in mice, while an AMPK activator, AICAR, raised endurance in sedentary mice after four weeks (Narkar et al., 2008). That paper made "exercise mimetic" a research term, and SLU-PP-332 was later studied as a route to a similar gene programme through ERR instead. Development history also separates them. GW501516 was a pharmaceutical drug candidate that reached early human studies before development stopped after cancers were found in long-term rodent studies, a history covered in our article on what happened in Cardarine's development. Anti-doping laboratories have already begun preparing for it. A doping-control group at the German Sport University Cologne characterised SLU-PP-332 and SLU-PP-915 by liquid chromatography with high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry and incubated both with human liver preparations; for SLU-PP-332 they identified nine metabolites, six Phase I products and three Phase II conjugates, and described the work as a basis for uncovering misuse (Möller et al., 2026).

That study was carried out in vitro. No excretion study in people has been published, so there is no established detection window for SLU-PP-332 in urine or blood, and any figure quoted for how long it remains detectable is unsupported. The accurate summary is that it is detectable in principle, that laboratories have the target metabolites to look for, and that the window has not been established. Anyone bound by an anti-doping code should treat it as prohibited and check the current list, which is updated every year.

Storage, stability and handling

No manufacturer stability data for SLU-PP-332 capsules has been published, so storage advice rests on the structure of the molecule and on laboratory practice. The acylhydrazone link at the centre of SLU-PP-332 is the part chemists watch: hydrazone bonds can be cleaved by water under acidic conditions, and the carbon-nitrogen double bond can switch between E and Z forms when exposed to light. Heat speeds both processes. The literature answers part of that question directly. None of the published animal studies tested a capsule. In a 2026 paper introducing a successor molecule, SLU-PP-915, the same research group stated that SLU-PP-332 improves aerobic performance in mice but lacks oral bioavailability, and presented oral activity as the reason for developing the new compound (Billon et al., 2026). The authors disclose that one of them is an inventor on the university's rights and holds shares in companies developing ERR agonists. No study has measured SLU-PP-332 exposure after oral intake in any species, so this page makes no claim about what a capsule does.

Because SLU-PP-332 is a small molecule, the usual explanation for poor oral uptake of peptides, digestion by stomach and gut enzymes, does not describe its problem; the abstract does not give a cause. A capsule fixes the amount at the filling stage: at 500 mcg the active is still well under a milligram per capsule, so its accuracy depends on how evenly the powder blend was mixed before filling. A liquid moves that uncertainty to the solvent and the measuring device, and keeps the acylhydrazone link in contact with water for its whole shelf life. Only a batch content assay can show whether either format matches its label.

SLU-PP-332 compared with 5-Amino-1MQ

5-Amino-1MQ is often discussed alongside SLU-PP-332, and our research guide covers the two together, because both are small molecules studied in obese mice and both are sold under metabolic headings. Their mechanisms are unrelated. SLU-PP-332 switches on transcription factors, the ERR receptors, that drive genes for mitochondrial energy production. 5-Amino-1MQ (5-amino-1-methylquinolinium) works on an enzyme instead: it inhibits nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT), which methylates nicotinamide and in doing so draws on the cell's pools of NAD+ and the methyl donor SAM.

The key 5-Amino-1MQ paper came from the University of Texas Medical Branch. Methylquinolinium inhibitors of NNMT, the chemical series to which 5-Amino-1MQ belongs, were selective against related methyltransferases, lowered the NNMT product 1-methylnicotinamide, raised intracellular NAD+ and SAM, and suppressed fat formation in cultured fat cells. In diet-induced obese mice, a potent inhibitor from the series given systemically reduced body weight, white fat mass and plasma cholesterol without a change in food intake, and the authors saw no observable adverse effects (Neelakantan et al., 2018). The weak point of SLU-PP-332 is the acylhydrazone bridge between its two ring systems. Moisture, particularly with any acidity, can split that bond back into its starting fragments, and light can convert the E arrangement of the carbon-nitrogen double bond into the Z form, a different shape. Warmth accelerates both.

In practice that means leaving the capsules in the manufacturer's container with the lid closed and any desiccant in place, stored at or below room temperature in a dark cupboard rather than on a windowsill or near a radiator, kettle or shower. Capsules that have stuck together, softened or discoloured should be set aside and disposed of according to local rules rather than examined further.
