It is a small oral molecule that binds the androgen receptor with high affinity and was designed to act preferentially in muscle and bone rather than in the prostate. This page lists every brand of RAD-140 stocked at Free Muscle, compared on strength per capsule, capsules per pack and batch testing, and summarises what the published research does and does not show.

What is RAD-140?

RAD-140 belongs to the SARM class: synthetic, non-steroidal ligands of the androgen receptor (AR), the same nuclear receptor that testosterone and dihydrotestosterone act on. The premise of the class is tissue selectivity: strong receptor activation in skeletal muscle and bone, much weaker agonism in the prostate, seminal vesicles and skin. RAD-140 was reported by its discoverers to be a potent, orally bioavailable AR ligand that showed this pattern in animal models.

Radius Health originally explored RAD-140 as a treatment for muscle wasting and, later, as an oral AR-targeted agent for androgen receptor positive breast cancer. The only human data in the literature come from that oncology programme, a small first-in-human phase 1 study in postmenopausal women with metastatic breast cancer. There are no published controlled trials of RAD-140 in healthy adults, and no data at all on the long-term effects of the compound in people.

RAD-140 has never been approved as a medicine anywhere in the world. Grade 3 or 4 adverse events occurred in 72.7 per cent of patients, including AST and ALT elevations and hypophosphataemia. Like other SARMs it binds the androgen receptor, but it has no steroid ring system and its structure is unrelated to testosterone. Radius Health described its discovery in 2011 as a potent, orally bioavailable SARM and reported its characterisation in several preclinical animal models of anabolic androgen action (Miller et al., 2011).

RAD-140 later entered a Phase 1 oncology trial in women with ER-positive, HER2-negative advanced breast cancer, published in 2022 (LoRusso et al., 2022). Twenty-two heavily pretreated patients took part. The adverse events recorded most often were raised AST (59%), ALT (45%) and bilirubin (27%), and grade 3 or 4 events occurred in 16 of the 22. Outside clinical research, published case reports link RAD-140 to cholestatic liver injury, including a biopsy-supported case in a 24-year-old man that resolved after exposure stopped (Leung et al., 2022).

The only other structured human data come from anti-doping research: a 2022 Cologne study gave adult male volunteers microgram amounts to chart how RAD-140 is excreted, covered under detection below (Wagener et al., 2022). On them the ester bound the receptor about 65 times more weakly than RAD-140. A living system may split an ester back to its parent, so this does not settle what RAD-150 does there, but it argues against the ester being a stronger ligand in its own right. Claims that it lasts longer or acts more strongly are unmeasured, and whether, and how fast, it becomes RAD-140 in the body is unknown.

The heavier formula matters for labels too: roughly a fifth of the ester's mass comes from the added benzoate portion, so a milligram figure for RAD-150 and the 600 mg on this pack do not describe the same quantity of the RAD-140 structure. Legally the two are alike: neither is a licensed medicine or an authorised food, and both are sold here for laboratory research only. WADA names RAD140 in S1.2; RAD-150 is absent, but the section introduces its examples with "including, but not limited to", so absence is no exemption. At the German Sport University Cologne, six excretion studies, each with five adult male volunteers, used single or five daily amounts of 1, 10 or 50 micrograms, and their urine was analysed by LC-HRMS/MS (Wagener et al., 2022). Unchanged RAD-140 outlasted all six metabolites tracked in every group. After one 50 microgram amount it was found up to 696 hours later, about 29 days; after five daily amounts of 50 micrograms, up to 912 hours, about 38 days, after the last. Part of the aim was to help laboratories judge whether a finding reflects deliberate use or contamination.

Every figure above comes from microgram exposures. How long RAD-140 remains detectable after milligram quantities, such as the 10 mg stated per capsule here, has not been reported that we know of, so for this product: detectable, window not established. The Cologne results set no upper limit, and anyone subject to testing should regard any contact with RAD-140 as a positive-test risk.

Storage, stability and handling

Shelf life for RAD-140 capsules has not been established in any published study we know of. The molecule was first described in a 2011 paper from Radius Health, which described it as a potent, orally bioavailable, non-steroidal SARM and reported its characterisation in several preclinical models of anabolic androgen action (Miller et al., 2011). Those models were animal experiments, not human studies.

PubChem records it under CAS number 1182367-47-0, formula C20H16ClN5O2, molecular weight 393.8 and InChIKey XMBUPPIEVAFYHO-KPZWWZAWSA-N. The systematic name, 2-chloro-4-[[(1R,2S)-1-[5-(4-cyanophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl]-2-hydroxypropyl]amino]-3-methylbenzonitrile, shows two defined stereocentres and no steroid ring system, and vosilasarm is listed among its synonyms.

The only published human trial is a Phase 1 dose-finding study in patients with hormone-receptor-positive metastatic breast cancer, reported in 2022 (LoRusso et al., 2022). Raised AST, ALT and bilirubin were among the most frequent adverse events, grade 3 or 4 adverse events occurred in 16 of the 22 patients, and the investigators identified a maximum tolerated dose. Two blood markers moved as expected for an androgen: sex hormone-binding globulin fell in every one of the 18 women tested and prostate-specific antigen rose in 16 of 20, which the investigators took as evidence that the receptor was engaged. The trial assessed tolerability and tumour response, not muscle or strength. Outside trials, case reports describe cholestatic liver injury in people who had taken products sold as RAD-140 (Leung et al., 2022), and hypogonadism in a man whose supplements contained RAD-140 together with other undeclared substances, so no single compound could be blamed (Chong et al., 2024). The legal answer is narrow. RAD-140 has no MHRA marketing authorisation, so it is not a licensed medicine in the UK; it is not an authorised food supplement; and it therefore cannot lawfully be sold for human consumption. Free Muscle sells it to adults aged 18 or over for laboratory research only. WADA prohibits it at all times under section S1 (anabolic agents), and buyers are responsible for the rules that apply to them, including any anti-doping code. The class as a whole is covered in What are SARMs? It was designed by Radius Health as an orally active compound that binds the androgen receptor and, in preclinical work, showed a stronger effect on skeletal muscle than on the prostate. The 2011 characterisation paper described it as potent and orally bioavailable and reported its activity in several preclinical animal models of anabolic androgen action. Animal results do not show how it behaves in people.

Clinical data are limited to a single first-in-human Phase 1 study in 22 postmenopausal women with ER-positive, HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer, published in 2022. The investigators described the safety profile as acceptable, but raised liver enzymes (AST in 59.1 per cent of participants, ALT in 45.5 per cent) and raised bilirubin were the most frequent treatment-emergent adverse events, and 16 of the 22 had a grade 3 or 4 event. The same study measured an elimination half-life of 44.7 hours. Sex hormone-binding globulin fell in all 18 participants in whom it was measured and prostate-specific antigen rose in 16 of 20, markers that the androgen receptor was being engaged well beyond muscle.

RAD-140 has never been approved as a medicine anywhere in the world. It sits outside both routes by which a substance can be sold for people: the MHRA has never granted it a marketing authorisation, so it cannot be sold as a medicine, and it is not an authorised food supplement, so it cannot be sold as food. What remains is sale as a research compound for laboratory work, the only basis on which Free Muscle lists it, and only to buyers aged 18 or over. WADA bans it at all times, so a tested athlete stands in a different position from a laboratory buyer. Buyers are responsible for the rules that apply to them. Background on the class is in What are SARMs? One contained no active ingredient, others contained prohibited substances not declared on the label, and where a SARM was present the measured amount differed from the packaging. The paper also notes that neither the European Medicines Agency nor the US Food and Drug Administration has approved any SARM. Anti-doping rules apply strict liability: an athlete is responsible for any prohibited substance found in their sample, whatever its source.

The most detailed human elimination data come from a 2022 study at the German Sport University Cologne. In six controlled excretion studies, each with five adult male volunteers given very small amounts of RAD-140, urine was analysed by LC-HRMS/MS. Concentrations peaked two to six hours after administration and then fell slowly. Unchanged RAD-140 remained detectable for up to 29 days after a single administration of the largest amount studied, and it accumulated when administration was repeated on consecutive days. The parent compound was detectable for longest, and several metabolites were described in human urine for the first time. The authors framed the work partly around contaminated supplements, which can also cause positive findings.

No published study gives a detection window for the quantities in commercial capsules, so for this product the accurate statement is: detectable, window not established. For anyone in a tested sport, any exposure carries the risk of a positive test.

Storage, stability and handling

Keep the pack sealed in its original container, closed between openings, in a cool, dry cupboard away from direct light and heat. Moisture is the main risk to capsules: capsule shells, gelatine ones in particular, soften and stick together in humid air and turn brittle when very dry, and damp powder degrades faster than dry. Heat speeds up both. Do not decant capsules into unlabelled containers: the batch number on the original pack is what ties the contents to a certificate.

We are not aware of published stability data for RAD-140 in capsule form, so the expiry or best-before date on the pack, where printed, is the limit to work within. Note the date the pack was first opened next to the batch number. Ordinary laboratory good practice applies: wear gloves when handling opened capsules or powder, work away from food and drink, keep the pack out of reach of children and animals, label any sample taken from the pack with compound, batch and date, and dispose of unwanted material as chemical waste, not via household bins or drains.

Glossary

SARM: selective androgen receptor modulator, a non-steroidal androgen receptor ligand designed to act more on muscle and bone than on the prostate.

Androgen receptor: the nuclear receptor activated by testosterone and dihydrotestosterone.

Testolone and vosilasarm: other names for RAD-140; testolone is an informal market name, vosilasarm the non-proprietary name used in reference databases such as PubChem.

Ester: a compound formed by joining an acid to an alcohol group; RAD-150 is the benzoic acid ester of RAD-140.

Half-life: the time taken for the concentration of a compound in the blood to fall by half.

Phase 1 trial: the first stage of human testing, focused on tolerability and pharmacokinetics in a small group.

HPLC: high-performance liquid chromatography, which separates a sample into its components; the usual basis of a purity figure.

LC-MS: liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry, which also measures molecular mass and so gives firmer proof of identity.

Certificate of analysis (COA): a laboratory report on one specific batch, carrying its batch number and test date.

WADA S1.2: the Prohibited List section for other anabolic agents, including SARMs, banned at all times.

MHRA: the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.

Related

RAD-140 (Testolone) collection: every brand we stock, side by side on strength, pack size and batch testing

All Yakka Strength products stocked at Free Muscle

SARMs, the wider range

RAD-140 (testolone): what the research says, including the reported side effects

Delivery and returns

Yakka Strength RAD-140 is supplied for laboratory research use only.
