BPC-157

BPC-157, also written BPC157 and known as Body Protection Compound 157 or pentadecapeptide BPC 157, is a synthetic fifteen-amino-acid peptide whose sequence is taken from a protein found in human gastric juice. It is studied in animal models of tendon, muscle, gut and vascular injury and has no approved medical use anywhere. This page lists every brand of BPC-157 stocked at Free Muscle and compares them on strength per capsule, capsules per pack and batch testing so you can judge the listings on the same terms.

What is BPC-157?

BPC-157 is a stable gastric pentadecapeptide, a fragment of the larger body protection compound isolated from gastric juice by a Zagreb research group in the early 1990s. Most of the published work comes from that group and its collaborators. The proposed mechanisms in animal studies involve the nitric oxide system, growth factor receptor signalling (including VEGFR2 and the FAK-paxillin pathway) and the formation of new blood vessels, but no single receptor for BPC-157 has been identified and the mechanism is not settled.

It has never been developed through a full clinical programme. There are no completed, controlled human trials establishing benefit or safety: the human data come from three small pilot studies without control groups, with about 30 participants between them, and no phase II trial has been completed (McGuire 2025; Mateescu 2026). BPC-157 is not an approved medicine in the UK, the EU or the United States. Since 2022 it has been listed by the World Anti-Doping Agency under S0, non-approved substances, so it is prohibited in sport at all times.

PubChem records BPC-157 under CID 9941957 and CAS number 137525-51-0. Its fifteen residues read GEPPPGKPADDAGLV in one-letter code, the molecular formula is C62H98N16O22 and the molecular weight of the free peptide is 1419.5 g/mol. Older papers also use the development codes PL 14736 and PLD-116.

What the published research reports

A 2003 study in rats reported that BPC-157 accelerated healing of a surgically transected Achilles tendon, with better functional recovery and tissue scores than saline-treated controls; in cultured tendon cells the peptide had no growth effect of its own but reversed the growth inhibition caused by the aldehyde 4-hydroxynonenal (Staresinic 2003). A 2011 in vitro study using rat Achilles tendon explants reported increased tendon fibroblast outgrowth, survival under oxidative stress and cell migration, with the FAK-paxillin pathway implicated (Chang 2011). A 2016 review by the originating group summarised animal work across gut, brain and vascular injury models (Sikiric 2016). The limitation shared by all of this is that it is animal or cell work, largely from one research network, at doses and routes that do not translate to any product.

The human literature is thin: three pilot studies, each run at a single clinic and none with a control group.

Study

Design

Participants

Reported

Limits

Lee 2021

Retrospective chart review and telephone survey after knee injections

17 charted, 16 reached; 12 had received BPC-157 alone

11 of those 12 said their knee pain had improved considerably

No control group, no blinding, no validated outcome measures

Lee 2024

Injections around the inflamed area of the bladder during one cystoscopy

12 women with interstitial cystitis unresponsive to an approved drug

All 12 reported improvement on a global response questionnaire; no adverse events were reported

No control group or blinding; outcome rated by the patients

Lee and Burgess 2025

Intravenous infusions on two consecutive days

2 adults who had received the peptide before

No change in the heart, liver, kidney, thyroid or blood glucose markers tested; neither reported an adverse effect

Two people cannot characterise risk

Toxicity studies in mice, rats, rabbits and dogs found no serious toxicity; dogs at the highest level tested showed a fall in creatinine that resolved two weeks after the peptide was stopped, local irritation was mild, and no genetic or embryo-fetal toxicity was seen (Xu 2020). In the laboratory it has been studied almost entirely in rodents and cell cultures, where research groups have examined models of tendon, ligament, muscle, gut and blood vessel injury and have described involvement of nitric oxide signalling and angiogenic growth factor pathways.

The "HCl" in this product name means the peptide is described as a hydrochloride salt. Peptides usually leave purification paired with a counter-ion such as acetate or chloride. The counter-ion adds weight without adding peptide, so a quoted mass can refer either to the salt or to the peptide within it. BioLab does not say which basis its 200 mcg figure uses. BPC-157 was associated with faster outgrowth of cells from the explants, better survival of cells under oxidative stress and more cell migration, although it did not directly increase cell proliferation. The authors linked these effects to the FAK-paxillin signalling pathway; the work was confined to cells and tissue in culture. A 2016 review by the Zagreb group that has produced most of the BPC-157 literature summarised its own brain-gut axis work in animals; it is a review of that group's research rather than independent confirmation.

The most complete independent appraisal so far is a 2025 systematic review from Case Western Reserve University, which screened 544 records published between 1993 and 2024 and kept 36 studies. Thirty-five were preclinical. The single clinical paper was a retrospective case series in which 7 of 12 patients given an injection into the knee for chronic pain reported relief lasting more than six months; it had no control group, and it concerned injection, not capsules. The reviewers graded the whole body of evidence at levels IV and V, the lowest tiers, found no clinical data on adverse effects in humans, and flagged unregulated manufacture and contamination as hazards.

The limitations therefore matter more than any single finding: almost all of the evidence comes from a single research network, no randomised controlled trial in humans has been published in full, and BPC-157 has never been authorised as a medicine anywhere. The honest answer is that nobody has measured it for capsules. Research on BPC-157 has used several routes: injection into the abdominal cavity in most rodent work, direct application in some wound models, and in certain Zagreb experiments the peptide was dissolved in the animals' drinking water. The 2025 systematic review reported that, in the animal data available, BPC-157 has a half-life of under 30 minutes, is metabolised in the liver and is cleared by the kidneys. None of those figures comes from a swallowed capsule in a person.

The underlying problem for any peptide taken by mouth is digestion. Stomach acid and pepsin, then pancreatic and brush-border enzymes, cleave peptide bonds, and a fifteen-residue chain is well within their range. The originating group reports that BPC-157 resists human gastric juice, but whether intact peptide crosses the gut wall in people is unknown.

As laboratory materials the formats behave differently. Capsules hold a fixed weight of dry powder, usually diluted with a filler, so uniformity depends on how well the batch was blended; a 200 mcg fill is a tiny fraction of the capsule contents, which makes even mixing harder. Lyophilised powder in vials stays dry until reconstituted; solutions, including ready-made liquids, are exposed to hydrolysis and contamination. None of this implies that any format has an effect. Thymosin beta-4 research is spread across many groups and mostly uses the full-length protein, including small early clinical studies of eye and skin preparations; the fragment sold as TB-500 has no comparable human data, and BPC-157 work comes mostly from one Zagreb network.

Question

BPC-157

TB-500

Parent molecule

Gastric juice protein

Thymosin beta-4

Size

15 amino acids

Fragment of a 43-amino-acid protein

Licensed as a medicine

Nowhere

Nowhere

WADA section

S0, non-approved substances

S2, growth factor modulators

Prohibited

At all times

At all times

No study has compared the two directly, so there is no basis for ranking one above the other, and we publish nothing on using them together. Water is the main threat, because it allows hydrolysis of peptide bonds; hydrochloride salts of peptides can also draw moisture from the air, so a pack left open in a humid room is at particular risk. Heat speeds degradation and ultraviolet light adds to it. Capsule shells also soften in damp air.

For the laboratory, that translates into a short routine. That work came from Chang Gung University in Taiwan, one of the few laboratories outside Zagreb to publish on the peptide. The molecule is the same in each; what differs is how studies delivered it and how each format behaves as a material.

Most rodent experiments injected BPC-157 into the abdominal cavity, and some from the Zagreb group dissolved it in the animals' drinking water. The 2022 pharmacokinetic study measured only intravenous and intramuscular injection, so no published figure exists for how much intact peptide, if any, reaches the blood after a capsule is swallowed. The general obstacle is digestion: pepsin and the intestinal proteases exist to cut peptide bonds, and a 15-residue chain is a typical substrate. The originating group describes BPC-157 as stable in human gastric juice, a finding from its own laboratory that no published human study has tested.

As materials, the formats differ mainly in handling. A lyophilised vial is dry and comparatively stable until reconstituted; in solution, hydrolysis and microbial growth become concerns, and each measured volume is only as accurate as the mixing and drawing. Ready-mixed liquids carry those issues from the start. A capsule holds a fixed fill of dry powder blended with a filler, so its consistency depends on how evenly the batch was mixed, which only a per-capsule content test can confirm. Searches such as "BPC 157 capsules 1000mcg" reflect labels that state strength in micrograms; none is stated for this pack. None of this suggests that any format produces an effect. S0 covers any pharmacological substance with no current approval for human therapeutic use by a government health authority, and applies at all times, in and out of competition, in every sport bound by the World Anti-Doping Code, UK Anti-Doping testing included. Strict liability applies: an athlete is responsible for any prohibited substance found in their sample, whatever its source or label.

Laboratories have had a validated method since 2017, when the Salt Lake City anti-doping laboratory identified BPC-157 in confiscated vials. Its urine assay reached a limit of detection of 0.1 ng/mL, the peptide stayed stable in urine for at least four days, and measuring a stable metabolite alongside it made the test more specific. No study has published how long after exposure BPC-157 remains detectable in human urine, so the accurate statement is: detectable, window not established. An unpublished window offers a tested athlete no protection, because the method exists and the ban never lapses.

Storage, stability and handling

No stability study of BPC-157 capsules has been published, so the printed expiry or best-before date, where there is one, is the limit to work to. General peptide chemistry still ranks the risks. Moisture comes first: it lets peptide bonds hydrolyse, clumps the powder and softens capsule shells, while very dry heat makes them brittle. Warmth speeds every degradation reaction, and light adds to it. Stability in gastric juice, as the originating group reports it, concerns hours in acid, not months on a shelf.

In practice, keep the tub sealed in a cool, dry place out of direct light, away from radiators, windowsills and steamy rooms. If it is kept in a fridge, let it reach room temperature before opening so condensation does not settle on the capsules, and leave any desiccant sachet in place. Note the date of first opening beside the batch number. Treat the pack as a laboratory reagent: gloves for opened capsules or loose powder, nowhere near food or drink, out of reach of children and animals, and waste disposed of as chemical waste rather than in household bins or drains.
