BPC-157

BPC-157, also written BPC157 and known as Body Protection Compound 157 or pentadecapeptide BPC 157, is a synthetic fifteen-amino-acid peptide whose sequence is taken from a protein found in human gastric juice. It is studied in animal models of tendon, muscle, gut and vascular injury and has no approved medical use anywhere. This page lists every brand of BPC-157 stocked at Free Muscle and compares them on strength per capsule, capsules per pack and batch testing so you can judge the listings on the same terms.

What is BPC-157?

BPC-157 is a stable gastric pentadecapeptide, a fragment of the larger body protection compound isolated from gastric juice by a Zagreb research group in the early 1990s. Most of the published work comes from that group and its collaborators. The proposed mechanisms in animal studies involve the nitric oxide system, growth factor receptor signalling (including VEGFR2 and the FAK-paxillin pathway) and the formation of new blood vessels, but no single receptor for BPC-157 has been identified and the mechanism is not settled.

It has never been developed through a full clinical programme. There are no completed, controlled human trials establishing benefit or safety, and the small amount of human data that exists is retrospective and uncontrolled. BPC-157 is not an approved medicine in the UK, the EU or the United States. Since 2022 it has been listed by the World Anti-Doping Agency under S0, non-approved substances, so it is prohibited in sport at all times.

What the published research reports

A 2003 study in rats reported that BPC-157 accelerated healing of a surgically transected Achilles tendon, with better functional recovery and tissue scores than saline-treated controls, and that it stimulated tendocyte growth in vitro (Staresinic 2003). A 2011 in vitro study using rat Achilles tendon explants reported increased tendon fibroblast outgrowth, survival under oxidative stress and cell migration, with the FAK-paxillin pathway implicated (Chang 2011). A 2016 review by the originating group summarised animal work across gut, brain and vascular injury models (Sikiric 2016). The limitation shared by all of this is that it is animal or cell work, largely from one research network, at doses and routes that do not translate to any product.

The human literature is thin. A 2021 retrospective chart review of 16 patients who had received intra-articular injections of BPC-157 for knee pain reported that most said their pain had improved on a telephone survey, but there was no control group, no blinding and no validated outcome measure (Lee 2021). None of the above is a claim about any product on this page.

There is currently no Free Muscle-brand BPC-157. Our own peptide in this family is sold under the designation BPC-150, a listing sold as a variant of BPC-157 that is not the literature peptide described above and has no published research of its own.

How to compare them

Multiply strength per capsule by capsules per pack to get total milligrams, then divide the price by that figure to get cost per milligram. On this page that calculation is only possible for BioLab. For the two brands with no published strength you are comparing on documentation alone, so ask for the batch certificate before you decide, and check that the batch number on it matches the pack.

Batch testing and certificates of analysis

A certificate of analysis (COA) is a laboratory report tied to one manufactured batch. It records the identity of the compound tested (usually by HPLC or LC-MS against a reference standard) and the purity found, and it carries the batch number, the test date and the name of the laboratory that ran the assay. Every Free Muscle-brand batch is assayed by Janoshik Analytical, an independent laboratory, and we will send the certificate for the batch you hold if you email us with the batch number from the label. For the brands on this page (BioLab, Thoroughbred Labs and Yakka Strength) a COA is shown only where the manufacturer has supplied one for the specific batch we hold, and we leave the field blank rather than imply a test that does not exist.

A generic PDF with no batch number, no date or no named laboratory is not a batch certificate, whatever it is called. Match the batch number on the certificate to the number on your pack before relying on it. Our lab tests page explains what to look for.

Legal status in the UK

BPC-157 is not a licensed medicine in the UK and has no marketing authorisation from the MHRA. It is not an authorised food supplement or novel food, and it may not be sold for human consumption. It is supplied here for laboratory research to adults aged 18 and over. It is not a controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act. In sport it is prohibited at all times under WADA class S0 (non-approved substances), so any tested athlete should treat it as a doping risk. Storage and handling

Keep the container sealed, in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and return it there each time the container has been opened. Do not decant into unlabelled containers. Keep out of the reach of children and animals. Handle in line with ordinary laboratory good practice, with gloves and a clean work surface, and dispose of unwanted material through an appropriate waste route rather than down the sink.
