Fabric and construction
What the product page states
For the Free Muscle Gym Hoodie, the page describes a heavyweight cotton-blend shell with a brushed-fleece interior. It lists the build as heavyweight, says the fabric is intended to hold its shape and last season after season, and says the inside is a soft, warm fleece lining. It also mentions reinforced seams and a print that is said to last wash after wash.
Equally useful is what the page does not state. It gives no fabric weight in grams per square metre or ounces, no fibre composition or percentages for the cotton blend, no colour list, no country of manufacture, and no details of the hood or pocket. If any of those matter to your decision, contact the seller, and check any label on the garment when it arrives.
What "heavyweight" can and cannot tell you about thickness
A thickness figure is not the whole story. A 2025 laboratory study found that a standard thickness test (ASTM D1777) applies a high force and does not give an accurate measure of uncompressed thickness; for one sample the result differed by more than double from a lower-force method (Torres et al., 2025). The abstract does not say whether fleece was tested, but it shows that a single thickness figure depends on how it was measured. If the figure matters to you, contact the seller.
Cotton, polyester and other fibres
The fibre mix affects how a garment handles sweat. A few findings are worth knowing, with the caveat that all were laboratory studies of T-shirts, two of them in male volunteers (De Sousa et al., 2014; Abedin and DenHartog, 2024), not fleece hoodies:
- In a trial of ten men exercising in 33 degrees Celsius and 60 per cent humidity, rectal temperature was lower in the final 15 minutes while wearing a shirt of 81 per cent polyester and 19 per cent elastane than a 100 per cent cotton T-shirt, and the synthetic shirt retained less sweat (De Sousa et al., 2014).
- In a cool-room cycling study with twelve men, a wool shirt held a higher torso skin temperature than cotton, viscose or polyester and was rated as more comfortable after exercise (Abedin and DenHartog, 2024).
- Researchers who compared a soybean-protein and cotton blend with plain cotton concluded that how quickly fabric moves water matters more for skin comfort than how much water it absorbs (Dai et al., 2008).
Not every finding points the same way. A review of clothing and thermoregulation reported that in warm conditions neither modest amounts of clothing nor the fabric itself changed thermoregulation or comfort, and that in the cold most reports found no fabric effect, though some did (Gavin, 2003). The same review noted that clothing construction altered thermoregulation during and after exercise in the cold, with fishnet construction giving greater heat dissipation.
Fibre content is one factor among several, and these studies cannot tell us how a fleece hoodie handles sweat. The page describes the Free Muscle hoodie's interior as brushed fleece.

Fit and sizing
Why fit changes how a hoodie feels
Fit is not only about appearance. Clothing insulates partly through the layer of still air trapped between fabric and skin. In a thermal manikin study of workwear, researchers used 3D scanning to measure those air gaps. Total insulation followed a curved relationship with gap size, stopped increasing once gaps exceeded about 30 mm, and was highest when the garment fitted closely without excessive tightness (Młynarczyk et al., 2025).
Movement matters too. Modelling for standing humans estimated that insulation falls about 20 per cent when cycling and about 40 per cent when walking, for clothing in general (Lotens, 1989). In a manikin test, a T-shirt made with added fullness lost significantly more insulation when walking or in wind than standard-cut T-shirts (Ho et al., 2011). A manikin test of two clothing ensembles (one air-impermeable, one air-permeable) in a 10 degree chamber found that walking and air movement pushed air through clothing and cut insulation, with a potential heat exchange of up to 17 and 161 watts per square metre for a one-layer and a three-layer outfit (Bouskill et al., 2002).
These are laboratory and modelling findings; none of the abstracts mentions hoodies.
What the Free Muscle Gym Hoodie page says
The page describes an athletic fit, shaped to look sharp on a trained frame rather than boxy or shapeless, in five sizes: XS, S, M, L and XL. It describes a consistent athletic cut across the range. Its advice is simple: order your usual size for the intended fit, size up if you want extra room for layering, and if you are between sizes, stay true to size for a fitted look or size up for a relaxed, layer-friendly fit. Some sizes may show as unavailable because they are not currently in stock, and the page invites customers to email to ask whether they will return.
The page does not publish a size chart with measurements or model details, so a practical method is to compare against a hoodie you already own and like.
A quick way to compare sizes
A practical tip, which is general guidance and not drawn from the studies: lay a hoodie you already like flat, measure straight across the chest under the armpits and double it, then compare that with your own chest measurement. If the exact figures matter to you, contact the seller.
Think about what you will wear underneath. If it is a T-shirt, your usual size gives the athletic fit the page describes. If you plan to wear a long-sleeved top beneath it, sizing up follows the page's own layering advice.
Care and longevity
Care instructions on the page
The product page gives clear instructions: machine wash cold at 30 degrees, wash inside out, and hang to dry to protect the fleece and the print. These are the instructions given on the product page.
No study in the sources used for this guide tests washing, shrinkage or pilling in fleece, so the page's instructions are the only product-specific guidance.
Read the label
Under EU Regulation 1007/2011, textile products made available on the market must be labelled or marked with their fibre composition, and the labelling must be durable, easily legible, visible and accessible (Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011, Article 14). The United Kingdom has its own retained version of these rules, which we have not verified here. Either way, check any label on the garment for fibre content and care instructions.
Longevity: what to expect
The page says the heavyweight fabric is designed to hold its shape and last season after season, and mentions reinforced seams. Those are the maker's statements about intent. As general guidance, not drawn from the studies or the product page: judge durability by checking the cuffs, hem and seams after the first few washes.
Where to see the range

Frequently asked questions
What should you look for in a gym hoodie in the UK?
Look at fabric weight and lining, the cut, the size and the care label. The Free Muscle page describes a heavyweight fleece hoodie with a brushed-fleece interior and an athletic cut, in sizes XS to XL, and advises a cold machine wash at 30 degrees, inside out, then hanging to dry. The page gives no weight figure or size chart, so compare any hoodie against the details a seller actually states.
What size gym hoodie should I buy?
Start from the intended fit. The Free Muscle page describes an athletic cut and suggests ordering your usual size for that look. Size up if you want a relaxed fit or room for layers. Comparing against a hoodie you already own is a practical check, since the page does not publish a size chart. The hoodie is on the Free Muscle Gym Hoodie product page, in sizes XS to XL.
Should I size up in a gym hoodie?
Size up if you want to wear layers underneath or prefer a loose fit. Stay true to size for a close, fitted look. A manikin study of workwear found insulation was highest at a close fit that was not excessively tight (Młynarczyk et al., 2025), and a manikin study of T-shirts found that added fullness lost more insulation when walking or in wind (Ho et al., 2011). Neither tested hoodies.
What does heavyweight mean for a hoodie?
It suggests thicker fabric; the page gives no figure. One 2025 laboratory study found that a standard thickness test can give a different result from a lower-force method (Torres et al., 2025), so treat thickness figures with caution.
Is a fleece-lined hoodie good for the gym?
The Free Muscle page presents it as a layer for cold starts, between sets or the walk home. A review of clothing and thermoregulation (Gavin, 2003) noted that in warm environments additional clothing increases insulation and can raise temperature more quickly during exercise, while also reporting that modest amounts of clothing did not alter thermoregulation or comfort in warm conditions. The review does not mention fleece hoodies, so it cannot say how this hoodie would perform.
How do I wash a fleece-lined gym hoodie?
The Free Muscle page advises a cold machine wash at 30 degrees, inside out, then hang to dry. The page says this is to protect the fleece and the print. Check any label on your own garment as well.
Will a cotton-blend hoodie shrink?
None of the studies cited in this guide measure shrinkage, and the product page does not give a shrinkage figure. Washing cold and hanging it to dry, as the page advises, is the cautious approach. If you are between sizes, bear that in mind.
Cotton or polyester: which is better for a hoodie?
It depends on the job. In laboratory studies of T-shirts, two of them in male volunteers, a polyester and elastane shirt retained less sweat than cotton in a hot room, while a wool shirt held more skin warmth than cotton or polyester in a cool one (De Sousa et al., 2014; Abedin and DenHartog, 2024). The Free Muscle page describes a cotton-blend shell but does not give the percentages, so check any label on the garment.
Can I wear a hoodie as a warm-up layer?
The Free Muscle page describes the hoodie as warm-up ready and as a layer for cold starts, between sets or the walk home. The studies cited in this guide did not test hoodies, so they cannot say whether a hoodie suits a warm-up.
